A Family Favorite

In the realm of comfort foods for my daughters, few recipes rival freshly baked cinnamon swirl bread. This delightful treat not only fills your kitchen with an irresistible aroma, but also it warms your soul with every heavenly bite.

There’s something magical about the combination of soft, fluffy bread and the sweet swirls of brown-sugared cinnamon. We use it for toast, before-bed snacks, or you could even use it as the base for a yummy cinnamon french toast. This bread is simple, yet versatile!

For me, I don’t just love the taste, but I also love the process of making it. I especially love it when my kids make it with me! Kneading the dough, watching it rise (only once!), and savoring the amazing aroma as it bakes in the oven – these steps are a type of therapy for me, an act of love and service for my daughters that culminates in a rewarding and delicious outcome. Whether you keep it for yourself, or share it with neighbors during the holiday season, this bread is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Now, let’s dive into the simple pleasure of making your own cinnamon swirl bread at home.

Homemade Cinnamon Swirl Bread Recipe

*This recipe can make 2 regular loaves or 6 mini loaves.

Ingredients:

  • 2 3/4 cups warm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 Tbs instant yeast
  • 1 Tbs salt
  • 1 Tbs nonfat dry milk
  • ~6 cups white flour
  • Butter, brown sugar, cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Spray pans with cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Mix water, sugar, oil, yeast, salt, and dry milk together in a mixing bowl with a dough hook. Slowly add flour, increasing speed as the dough becomes thicker. Add flour until the sides are beginning to clean and the dough is soft and tacky but not overly wet. Knead for 10 minutes.
  3. Cut the dough either in half or in 6ths. On a floured surface roll the dough out in a rectangle about a half inch thick. Cover with melted butter (as much as you’d like).
  4. Sprinkle over brown sugar and work it in (as much as you’d like). Sprinkle cinnamon over top.
  5. Roll the dough up fairly tight width wise and place in a greased pan, open side down. Cover and let it rise until doubled in size or about 60-70 minutes.

Place in a COLD oven.

  • 2 loaves: Bake at 350 degrees for 38 minutes
  • 6 mini loaves: Bake at 335 degrees for 27 minutes

As soon as they are done, turn them out onto a cooling rack. Enjoy!!
