In today’s digital age, screens are everywhere. Kids often glue themselves to tablets, phones, and TVs. And while I know classroom technology helps in many ways, I still get annoyed by how much screen time kids have at school!
We’ve heard this a thousand times, but too much screen time can be harmful to children. It can negatively affect their health and development. It can also negatively affect their social development if the only thing they do to “interact” with friends is participate in activities with screens.
So here is my plea to parents and caregivers: there there are so many alternatives to screen time for kids! I encourage you to do all you can to support outdoor play, arts and crafts, and independent play.
Let’s explore the benefits of screen-free activities and how they can enrich your child’s life.

Why Screen-Free Activities Matter: The Evidence on Screen Time
Screen time has become a significant part of kids’ daily routines. However, studies show that excessive screen exposure can have negative effects.
The American Academy of Pediatrics warns about potential health issues from too much screen time. These include obesity, sleep problems, and behavioral difficulties. The American Heart Association advises limiting screen time to no more than 1-2 hours per day for children.
Here are some of the documented impacts of excessive screen use:
- Increased risk of obesity
- Sleep disturbances
- Behavioral challenges
- Reduced attention span
Additionally, too much screen time can hinder a child’s cognitive development. It can also interfere with social skills. Thus, screen-free time is vital for balanced childhood development. It helps children explore the world beyond screens!
Tips for Reducing Screen Time at Home
Encouraging fun activities without screens requires a bit of creativity and planning. Here are some steps I recommend to parents who are struggling with screen time battles:
- Set clear rules about screen time limits in your home. (The interactive spinner from my Be Smart With Screen Time resource has been a huge hit at our house!)
- Lead by example. Participate in screen-free activities with your kids! When children see adults enjoying these activities, they feel more inclined to join.
- Create a screen-free zone at home. Designate specific areas where devices aren’t allowed. Or, set specific time periods when people can’t use devices, such as during family dinner.
Being consistent with these tactics will benefit your children’s development. And it paves the way for connection and stronger family bonds!
